The FlexRadio FLEX-5000C™ Software Defined Radio

High Performance Software Defined Radio with the Convenience of an Integrated Computer!

FLEX-5000C - Front View

The FLEX-5000C has all of the standard features of a FLEX-5000A™ with additional enhancements to push the level of integration and ease of use to a new level.

The FLEX-5000C builds on the phenomenal performance and architecture of the FLEX-5000A by incorporating the software defined radio hardware and the computer, which is essentially the digital signal processing (DSP) engine and the Graphical User Interface (GUI), into one convenient package. Since the same receiver and transmitter are common throughout the entire FLEX-5000 family, the FLEX-5000C has the same outstanding performance and capabilities of the FLEX-5000A. By utilizing an embedded Intel Core™ 2 Duo processor the FLEX-5000C eliminates the need for an external computer and FireWire connection. This makes the FLEX-5000C a "single box software defined radio solution" that is ideal for amateurs who don't have or want to use an external computer or want a less complex setup for their operating position.  It is the perfect software defined radio for remote operation!

Mini-ITX Motherboard with Intel Chipset.

The FLEX-5000C is well equipped with a highly optimized and feature rich Mini-ITX motherboard that incorporates the mPGA478 socket which utilizes Intel Core™ 2 Duo processors.  Due to Intel's latest dual core technology, the motherboard achieves both superior data processing capability and low power consumption which makes it ideal for the FLEX-5000C.  Here are just some of the Mini-ITX motherboard's features:
  • Front Side Bus 533/667 MHz
  • Intel® 945GM + Intel® ICH7R chipset
  • Intel® GMA950 graphic controller on board
  • Dual independent display support (two DVI interfaces)
  • DDR2 memory support
  • SATA150/300 IDE controller
  • 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports
  • USB 2.0 Ports
  • External RS232C Serial Port
  • EEE1394 Firewire Ports
Note: The mini-ITX motherboard contained in the FLEX-5000C operates from the user supplied 13.8 VDC power supplied for the transceiver and does not require a connection to 120/220 VAC power source.

Intel Core™ 2 Duo Processor Embedded.

The FLEX-5000C embedded motherboard utilizes a high performance Intel Core™ 2 Duo processor inside the FLEX-5000C chassis.  This innovative hardware combination eliminates the external computer and FireWire® connection which greatly simplifies setup.  All of the necessary radio and computer hardware needed to run the transceiver is conveniently packaged in one enclosure†.

Windows XP Professional Installed Along with FlexRadio PowerSDR™ and a Collection of Ham Radio Software.

The embedded Intel Core™ 2 Duo compatible motherboard is pre-loaded with the Windows XP Professional operating system and has the latest released version of FlexRadio PowerSDR installed and ready to go.  In addition, a collection of freeware and shareware programs are loaded on the hard drive for your convenience, such as vCom, the virtual serial port software needed for communicating with third-party CAT programs and other ham radio specific software.

Dual Channel DDR2 Memory.

High speed random access memory (RAM) is essential for execution of real-time audio processing programs such as FlexRadio PowerSDR. To ensure optimal performance, the embedded Mini-ITX motherboard is populated with one (1) GB of fast dual-channel DDR2 RAM.

Advanced Graphic Display and Dual Independent Video Display Support.

It is more and more common for amateur radio operators using software defined radios to utilize various software programs at the same time they are running FlexRadio PowerSDR.  In order for all of the programs to be visible at one time, a very large single display or multiple monitors are employed.  The FLEX-5000C uses Intel's Embedded Graphics Drivers to provide support for high resolution monitors and dual-display configurations.  With the dual-display configuration you can configure multiple monitors in either TWIN (both monitors have the same timings) or CLONE (monitors have different timing) modes for unsurpassed flexibility.

Serial ATA (SATA) Hard Drive.

The FLEX-5000C comes standard with a small format (2.5") 160 GB SATA/150 hard drive. Although FlexRadio PowerSDR is not a disk intensive application, the 1.5 Gb/s transfer rate of the SATA/150 hard drive is necessary for optimal paging file performance required by Windows XP which does indirectly affect the performance of FlexRadio PowerSDR.

Wireless Keyboard and Mouse.

Every FLEX-5000C comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse that further eliminates the clutter of cables while providing the ultimate flexibility in setting up your shack or taking your FLEX-5000C on the road.

Direct Internet Access from the FLEX-5000C.

You will be able to access the Internet directly from your FLEX-5000C using the Windows XP operating system and an Internet web browser of your choice‡.  You can have direct access to www.flexradio.com, packet clusters, propagation conditions, QRZ.com and other Internet based resources from your radio.  This capability provides the convenience to download the most current version of FlexRadio PowerSDR directly to the FLEX-5000C.  You can also setup remote operation with voice over IP software and Windows remote control software, like VNC.  Check out the remote operation "how to" articles located in the FlexRadio Knowledge Base.

FLEX-5000C Technical Specifications:

Please refer to the KC article, FLEX-5000A and FLEX-5000C Transceiver Specifications for the most current technical specifications.  Please note that the specifications for the FLEX-5000C are subject to change at any time without notice.
